One of the missions of First Presbyterian Church, Portage la Prairie, is to operate the community soup kitchen:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Soup Kitchen is open Mon. \u2013 Fri. from 11:30 a.m. \u2013 12:30 p.m. for soup, sandwich and dessert.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Closed on statutory holidays <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2005 8,130 meals were served; the average number of meals served per day was 32<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteers heat soup, prepare sandwiches, serve food and clean up<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a time commitment of about 3 hours (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteer opportunities can be one or 2 days a month, or once a week.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For many of our volunteers, working at the Soup Kitchen is not only an opportunity to feed those in need but it is also a social time. They enjoy chatting together while they work. More volunteers are needed and welcome.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen depends on donations of food and money.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The soup is donated from a few Hutterite colonies. The Co-op, which was the primary source for bread\/baked goods, now shares their supplies with the Food Bank and School Division as well as the Soup Kitchen which means we often need to buy bread.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are other ongoing expenses e.g. coffee, tea, condiments, eggs, cleaning supplies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Soup Kitchen requires require $25,000 per year to cover expenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cheques are made payable to “First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tax receipts are issued at the end of the year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
