Soup Kitchen Information

One of the missions of First Presbyterian Church, Portage la Prairie, is to operate the community soup kitchen:

The Soup Kitchen is open Mon. – Fri. from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for soup, sandwich and dessert.

Closed on statutory holidays

In 2023 we served 9772 meals, an average of 39 meals a day.

Volunteers heat soup, prepare sandwiches, serve food and clean up

It is a time commitment of about 3 hours (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)

Volunteer opportunities can be one or 2 days a month, or once a week.

For many of our volunteers, working at the Soup Kitchen is not only an opportunity to feed those in need but it is also a social time. They enjoy chatting together while they work. More volunteers are needed and welcome.

The First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen depends on donations of food and money.

The soup is donated from a few Hutterite colonies. The Co-op, which was the primary source for bread/baked goods, now shares their supplies with the Food Bank and School Division as well as the Soup Kitchen which means we often need to buy bread.

There are other ongoing expenses e.g. coffee, tea, condiments, eggs, cleaning supplies.

The Soup Kitchen requires $23,000 to $25,000 per year for expenses.

Cheques are made payable to “First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen”.

Tax receipts are issued at the end of the year.
